My eyes are constantly drawn to the small details often missed in the hustle and bustle. These little clay pots were cast aside on the roof of an Egyptian home. I was drawn to the way they were so casually strewn there, as though that was their place, as much as our own crockery has its place on the shelves in our homes. This was the birth of 'Clay' - and possibly an embarrassing moment for me, as the locals looked on quite puzzled as to why I was so fascinated by their household items and not the spectacular view of the Nile from the rooftop.
Image Text:
A traditionally used substance in many cultures across the globe, now as much an art form as it is a practical vessel. Pottery in Egypt began in ancient times and remnants can be found across the country. The clay pots pictured are from the Nubian Village. A short boat ride from Aswan will lead you to an ancient civilisation on the banks of the Nile. Here you will find a community rich in history where many cultural traditions are still thriving today. Patience is a virtue in the art of pottery, which speaks to the artisans of the ancient world. Holding, transporting, cooking, collecting, preserving, rituals, displays; a truly timeless substance given to us from the earth.
